zyxer
Hi
-
zyxer
I am interested in mining. I use linux. Any pointers on how to go about it? Is it possible to mine using FOSS drivers? I remember years ago that I needed proprietary drivers that are suboptimal for gaming
-
Inge
GPU's are very inefficient for mining Monero zyxer - today you would want to use a CPU instead, no proprietary drivers needed.
-
m-relay
-
zyxer
Oh, yea I forgot monero prefers CPU. Thanks
-
m-relay
<rasdf:w33b.cloud> the xmrig binaries have min 1% donation to the author, you have to compile yourself to disable donating
-
zyxer
I have no issues donating. But thanks for the info.
-
zyxer
xmrig is preferable to the monero-gui?
-
m-relay
<rasdf:w33b.cloud> not sure if there is a performance difference
-
zyxer
My CPU is low end but my GPU is mid to high end. Even if GPU is ineffiecent it might give same performance as CPU, and since I live in very cold climate the ineffiecencies aren't too much of a problem since ineffiecent just means more energy goes to heat.
-
zyxer
Heating up home using mining. Almost 100% power effiecency :D
-
m-relay
<rasdf:w33b.cloud> lol
-
zyxer
I haven't had time to check out the monero-gui properly yet. I assume the monero-gui uses same backend for mining as XMRig?
-
m-relay
<rasdf:w33b.cloud> don't think so
-
zyxer
I see
-
zyxer
Can I somehow send commands through cli to gui? I can access my PC using ssh jump server but I have no graphics tunneled and hardware limitations
-
zyxer
Got a hunch on how long, on average (I understand it is average and if unlucky it can take years before finding one block), before I find a block solomining 1MH over 113 seconds?
-
Inge
probably easier to just run xmrig I'd wager
-
zyxer
You mean to make a profit?
-
zyxer
I'm not sure what you mean is easier on XMRig
-
Inge
I mean, if you have ssh and limitations on hw and no x11 tunneling and stuff...
-
Inge
there is also #monero-pools for mining questions :)
-
zyxer
Limitations make x11 impossible. The ssh is a jump server. Then connect using serial cable
-
Inge
Which can give info like this: < monerobux> At 1000000 h/s with network diff of 2.57e+11 your expected time for find a block is 2.57e+05 s or 2.98 days.
-
zyxer
Oh, ok. Thanks!
-
zyxer
I'll ask in monero-pool
-
Inge
1 MH is like ... 67 AMD 3900x CPU's
-
zyxer
Yea but I gave MH, not MH/s. Because for some reason XMRig bench site gave how many seconds before 1 MH
-
zyxer
Or I just didn't see the normal H/s
-
moomoo
-
zyxer

m-relay
<detherminal:matrix.org> I don't understand this, stack works great
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> Nono, subaccount
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> Stack only supports the #0 tree
-
m-relay
<detherminal:matrix.org> Hmm, it has coin control for other coins but not monero i guess.
-
m-relay
<detherminal:matrix.org> If you need this feature, then stack might not be the best for you.
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> Stack will support subaccounts eventually
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> Its an essential feature. Without it, balance recovery is broken
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> (for seeds that contain funds on subaccounts)

Maddie
Is it possible to "unsend" a transaction? I was so stupid as to sweep my account to the wrong address lol. Transaction still hasn't confirmed, there are 3 blocks to go.
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> its already in mempool?
-
Maddie
No idea, whats that lol?
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> do you have a transaction hash and does it show up on xmrchain.net?
-
Maddie
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> the 10 confirmations number is just for privacy reasons, that thing is done for
-
Maddie
Oh well, not the end of the world. I have the keys for that address aswell. But out of curiousity how meany transactions before its set in stone. And if it was REALLY importent that I undid the transaction how would I have done it?
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> im not sure if you could have recovered it even when it was just in the mempool, we dont have RBF and consensus is that zeroconf is fine for smaller amounts so id assume its pretty hard to do. can anyone with deeper understanding chime in please?
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> >I have the keys for that address aswell
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> thats very fortunate
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> the transaction is technically set in stone from the first confirmation onwards
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> you might get a lucky reorg and have it kicked out but those are not that common
-
Maddie
So I'd have to be incredibly quick?
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> well
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> im not entirely sure if you could even get it out of the mempool
-
Maddie
I thought that if you tried to do a double spent, both transactions would just cancel?
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> i believe the first one would still go through
-
Maddie
I should probably be useing address_book then, thease 2 addresses I mixed up look pretty similar and are 2 I frequently sent to and are my own.
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> If you try to doublespend, the second one will throw an error "already spent"
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> not if the wallet is unaware
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> You cannot unsend a tx
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> How many conf before set in stone > depends on network conditions
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> But typically if the tx is transmit to the whoke network (and is in the pool off tx waiting for their first confirmation), it will confirm
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> There are conditions where a 0 conf tx is not "set in stone"
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> the transactions would be timestamped, right? i only know of the theoretical scenario where you send a transaction to someone and then instantly submit a second transaction to a better-connected node
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> Tldr: as you as you send the tx, theres no going back.. unless the network gets attacked or reorgs
-
Maddie
I guess lesson learned then. Be sure to get addresses right or you'll spend more in fees (which are super low anyways). Could have been worse though, I could have been this guy
old.reddittorjg6rue252oqsxryoxengaw…ere_really_no_way_to_cancel_pending
-
m-relay
<k4r4b3y:karapara.net> Apart from a reorg, are there other scenarios?
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> Tx pool too big and your tx gets dropped by nodes
-
Maddie
@monerobull:monero.social yeah you could probably try spending the same inputs again then sending that "block" (not sure if I'm useing the right term) to a lot of good nodes and hope it gets propegated first? No idea if that would work but its more suficticated then what I could pull off.
-
m-relay
<k4r4b3y:karapara.net> Hmm.. Didn't know this was a thing. What's the upper limit gor the tx pool and how much tx'es does that correspond to?
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> so all of the scenarios are major edge-cases that we dont expect to happen on accident
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> i think default is 600mb but configurable (?)
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> ~200k or more "regular" tx
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> lol
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> yeah youre not getting randomly kicked out in the foreseeable future

<monerobull:matrix.org> maddie, its very good that you learned this at the cost of a single monero transaction (basically free) and not by loosing your entire stack ,:)
-
m-relay
<k4r4b3y:karapara.net> Lol*
-
m-relay
-
Maddie
@monero:matrix.org funny you say that, I just checked how much it costs me in extra fees and it totals less then 0.01 so I really got off with this mistake very cheaply. This is mostly, very funny to me actually :') (crying of laugher).
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> i once sent someone tether on the wrong network
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> fixing that was like 30$ 😭
-
Maddie
How did that work out? If its the wrong network, wouldn't it just fail because you only have funds on the correct network?
-
Maddie
Like if I sent someone monero on the stage net, I don't lose funds on the main net, right?
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> nah they said they want it on binance chain and i sent it to eth from a multi-asset wallet
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> bsc and eth addresses are the same on both networks
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> i dont think you could even send stagenet monero to a mainnet address
-
Maddie
Thats too ethereum specific for me to understand lol. I'm too stuborn on haveing a cli/tui client that I never got into eth. But did the guy have a "bsc" address only and couldn't get it because you sent it as a eth address? Couldn't the guy just create a eth address with the same key as the "bsc" one and have the eth as eth instead of "bsc"? again this might be too etheriumy for me to
-
Maddie
understand.
-
sech1
yes, it's a p2pool block
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> well if you have the key to the bsc address you have the key to the eth address
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> these are two different networks but you can have the same address on both networks
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> these addresses look identical
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> what's an irc bridge
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> thanks sech1

m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> it allows us to chat
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> you on your grandpa-ass protocol and me on matrix
-
m-relay
<gfdshygti53:monero.social> That sound like ETH
-
Maddie
@monerobull:matrix.org didn't the guy just the eth back then you sent him "bsc" instead? Are transaction fees that high on ethereum or am I missing something?
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> yeah they were high
-
m-relay
<gfdshygti53:monero.social> always use stablescam on TRX lol
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> i sent a token to their eth address (like 5-10$ loss), they didnt have ETH to transfer the token anywhere so i had to send them eth as well (~3-7$) and also to compensate for them having to do the token transfer on eth (5-10$ again)
-
Maddie
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> Okx finally delists monero today.
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> yesterday was hilarious, way more buys than sells, and thr price dropped. Idiots gave us a fud firesale
-
Maddie
What is hv-bridge though? I don't know it.
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> we also have bridgerton here on matrix
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> its bridging to the monero discord
-
Maddie
Oh.
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> the very best bridge in our entire ecosystem
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> maybe in all of crypto!
-
Maddie
You like discord that much?
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> no but i set up the bot
-
Maddie
Oh.
-
Maddie
This is getting offtopical but what matrix client are you useing btw?
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> hi
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> element web like a normie
-
RavFX
Maddie: Element or Schildichat, the less shitty option
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> yk the default xmrig client
-
Maddie
I will never understand matrix. To each their own I guess, and I'll leave at that.
-
Maddie
it at that*
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> let's say 1,000 machines mining for 4-12h a day
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> how much monero would that make
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> ?
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> depends on the machines?
-
Maddie
eboy: depends on hash rate...
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> Well let's say
-
m-relay
<gfdshygti53:monero.social> that would make like ~4-12k hr total
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> an average pc
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> if you took 1000 people
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> randomly
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> if its shitty "your grandmas"-pcs youd probably be lucky to make a dollar or 2
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> some have good pcs some bad
-
m-relay
<gfdshygti53:monero.social> oh wait, 4-12 hours a day, not like 1000 microthing that do 12hr a day
-
m-relay
<gfdshygti53:monero.social> Well, it really depend of the machines
-
RavFX
It also depend of how there configured
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> wdym configured
-
RavFX
like you have to have 1gb pages enabled on linux or hugepages on Windows. Plus the memory have to not be fragmented for them to work except if you preallocate them
-
Maddie
eboy: average is unknown, my dads pc can barely run winblows whilst mine is mineing 24/7 and running all my things.
-
RavFX
My IRC is on a 486, wonder how much hash rate that going to produce :D
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> alright so
-
Maddie
RavFX: :O? Preallocated ram? I'm intriqued.
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> on average
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> with 1000 machines
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> how much daily do you think I could get
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> $20?
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> just average computers
-
RavFX
Between 42H/s to like ~30H/s if we talk about threadrippers
-
RavFX
30KH/s*
-
Maddie
eboy: asumeing average is ~600 (because thats the case for my cluster) we'll say ~11 cents.
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> getting a full gb of ram on the average pc will already be a challange lol
-
Maddie
600 hashes per second*
-
RavFX
600, that would be quite low end atom or something like that right?
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> 11 cents..
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> 600 sounds like your average business computer yeah
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> from 1000 machines..
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> at least if you dont want to be detected
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> all of which have decent processors
-
Maddie
RavFX: No idea what average is though, I took an average of my cluster of random laptops.
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> I'm using xmrig
-
RavFX
I have a pile of business computer (1L computer form factor). They do between 3.5 and 4Kh/s
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> on my 3060 ti with a ryzen 3600x
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> or ryzen 5600x
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> it's like
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> 12 cents a day
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> eboy, if these arent your computers and you arent paying for power, any money you could gain from it would be offset by the felony charges youd face
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> no they're mine.
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> do you pay for power?
-
Maddie
eboy: find all the cpus on
xmrig.com/benchmark then add the hashrates together and devide by 1000 then we'll have your average hashrate.
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> yes
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> then it 100% depends on what you pay for power
-
Maddie
> <eboy> 11 cents..
-
Maddie
Sorry I forgot to devide by 2, lets say 5 cents.
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> 5 cents
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> a day?
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> from 1000 machines
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> nah per machine i would assume
-
Maddie
eboy: no, my math was wrong but it doesn't matter BECAUSE WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT AN AVERAGE MACHINE IS.
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> and again, depends on the price of power
-
Maddie
Yes per machine, I forgot to multiply by 1000 to get a total.
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> oh if its per machine
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> then 5 cents is fine
-
hv-bridge
<eboy> that's really good actually
-
Maddie
eboy *sigh* you need the hashrate because its literly imposible to find out how much XMR you'll get per day on average if you don't have the hashrate. I can't even give you an estimate, its IMPOSSIBLE. 5 cents per day per machine is ASUMEING the HASHRATE is 600 where *I* made a calculation mistake, you'll actually get closer to 1.9 cents. Power and XMR's market rate are also super importent
-
Maddie
factors if you want to know the profit in USD.
-
Maddie
Do you actually have thease 1000 computers or not? Because if you do, run xmrig and get the hashrate.
-
Maddie
I also forgot to mention that another importent factor is how you're mineing, I again made an assumption that you would use p2pool, but if you're going to solo mine or use some other public pool, the payout will be different.
-
Maddie
Yet another factor I remembered: if you're going to mine on p2pool, are you entered into the raffle? Because someone did a raffle:
xmrvsbeast.com/p2pool where you get extra hashrate for 1H iirc.
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> If you have 1000 machines, use xmrig-proxy and point it at a p2pool daemon or solomine
-
zyxer
How can I make it work on monero-gui flatpak?
